Copper John Nymph

The Copper John is universally known as a “fish catcher” and should be a staple addition to every fly box. It is a fly that’s relatively easy to fish and its effectiveness comes from it’s slim, high-density design meaning it sinks fast to where the fish are feeding. Perfect for when you’re struggling to “match the hatch”.

Our reccomendation

You’ll find this fly in multiple colours or variations, characterized by its bead head and copper wound body. Our recommendation is to keep several colour variations and hook sizes to experiment with. Use high-flash and more colorful variations for coloured water and in clearer, slower moving water use more natural brown, olive and black variations. Larger hook sizes for summer when food is more abundant and smaller hook sized for autumn and spring.

This nymph fly is considered a general pattern in that it mimic several species of fly. It’s closest resemblance is to that of a stonefly or mayfly nymph.

Hatch Match

This fly proves particularly effective in coloured water, especially a day or so after a heavy rain fall. It’s density means it’s also suitable for fast moving water, sinking fast in a short amount of time. A trait few other flies exhibit as successfully.

Due to the fast sinking nature of a Copper John, it makes an excellent point fly (the bottom fly on your nymph setup). It will suit all styles of nymph setups including French, Spanish and Czech.
